The Kenya Supreme Court has cancelled the result of last month’s contentious presidential election and ordered for a new election to be conducted within 60 days. This is the first time in Africa that a court has nullified the vote of a sitting leader. This clearly indicates that the Kenya,s supreme court is totally independent for them to have the power to cancel the vote of Uhuru Kenyatta (the ruling president).
The court upheld a petition filed by opposition candidate Raila Odinga, who claimed the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta on August 8 was fraudulent.
Chief Justice David Maraga; who cancelled the election, said,“The presidential election was not conducted in accordance with the constitution, rendering the declared results invalid, null and void,” ordering fresh elections to be conducted within 60 days.
