It seems like on the 20th of September while some African leaders were busy wining and dinning with the new president of America; president Biya, arguably the most experienced African leader; was busy requesting for audience from the new UN secretary general; Mr. Antonio Guterres.
On the 22nd of September 2017, the new Secretary General of the United Nations granted an audience to the President of the Republic of Cameroon, His Excellency Paul Biya and he became the first African president to be granted audience by Mr. Antonio Guterres.
Mr. Antonio Guterres had a cordial discussion with the Cameroon Head of State in their first ever meeting. Issues such as the fight against the Boko Haram terrorist group and the proper management of refugees from Nigeria and the Central African Republic were discussed by both personalities.
Finally, the Head of State made an appeal for the full implementation of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on Bakassi.
On his part, the UN Secretary General reassured President Paul Biya that the UN will stand by Cameroon in its fight against terrorism and the handling of refugees. In addition to that, Mr. Antonio Guterres also thanked president Biya for the hospitality he received as UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He was referring to his official visit to Cameroon in March 2015.
